Kinesthetic Instrument
Interface
The Kinesthetic Instrument (KI) is a generative art system that explores the intersections of Fluxus aesthetics, posthumanist theory, self-organizing systems, and Lacanian topology. The KI is an interactive device that produces sounds and video-feedback art in response to the touch of the user. Its generative processes are guided by the principles of emergence and non-linearity, resulting in unpredictable and complex patterns of sound and image. Its goal is to encourage the emergence of Homo Gemeiwesen through touch and positive disintegration.
The KI embraces the aesthetics of imperfection, emphasizing the beauty of random variation and noise in generative art. The KI is a self-organizing system that challenges traditional notions of authorship and intentionality, foregrounding the role of the user in the creation of the artwork.
Emergence
The KI is inspired by Fluxus and its emphasis on intermedia, indeterminacy, and the blurring of boundaries between art and life. The KI also draws on posthumanist theory and its critique of human exceptionalism, highlighting the agency and creativity of non-human entities. The KI is a self-organizing system that operates according to the principles of Lacanian topology, which emphasizes the fluid and constantly shifting nature of subjectivity and the role of the unconscious in the formation of the self.
The Kinesthetic Instrument is an invitation to reflect on the complex relationship between humans and technology, art and life, subject and object. It is a celebration of the beauty of imperfection, the creativity of emergence, and the power of self-organizing systems to challenge our assumptions about the world and ourselves.
Concepts
- Embodied Cognition: The KI is a device that embodies the principles of embodied cognition, which posits that cognition arises from the interplay between the body and the environment.
- Sensorimotor Integration: The KI relies on the integration of sensory information from various modalities to create an immersive, multisensory experience.
- Feedback Loops: The KI uses feedback loops to generate sounds and visuals that respond to the user’s movements, creating a dynamic and interactive system.
- Enactive Approach: The KI is based on the enactive approach to cognition, which emphasizes the importance of bodily action and perceptual experience in the formation of knowledge and understanding.
- Chaos Theory: The KI’s generative processes are based on the principles of chaos theory, which emphasizes the importance of small perturbations in complex systems.
- Aesthetics of Imperfection: The KI embraces the aesthetics of imperfection, emphasizing the beauty of random variation and noise in generative art.
- Self-Organization: The KI is a self-organizing system, meaning that it has the ability to adapt and reorganize itself in response to changes in the environment or user input.
- Posthumanism: The KI embodies posthumanist perspectives that question traditional notions of subjectivity, embodiment, and agency.
- Ethics of Emergence: The KI’s generative processes are underpinned by an ethics of emergence, which emphasizes the importance of ethical considerations in the creation of generative art.
- Intersectionality: The KI reflects the principles of intersectionality, acknowledging the multiple and interlocking social identities that shape our experiences of the world.
